Arthritis

Arthritis, with over 100 different types, is a disease that in some way affects everyone. Chances are, even if you don’t have arthritis yourself, you’ll know someone who has one of the many forms that plays a role in their daily life. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common forms of arthritis and is degenerative, or a form of arthritis where the cartilage of the joints breaks down. This is part of the aging process and generally found in the knees, spine, hips, and hands. Rheumatoid arthritis, another one of the more common forms of arthritis is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease in which the body’s own immune system attacks the joint tissues.  Our staff at Watts Chiropractic Clinic in Cumming, GA, can diagnose and treat your arthritis.

Arthritis

Signs

Arthritis is one of the most prevalent disabling conditions in today's life. Swelling of the joints, pain, and changes in the joints will limit movement and can affect anyone of all ages. Sometimes the onset is slow, other times it comes on suddenly. Research is being done to learn about the causes of the various types of arthritis, a disease that can affect the joints in addition to affected organs, muscles and connective tissues. The joints are generally where arthritis symptoms and signs show up. Common signs include:

    • Stiffness
    • Decreased range of motion
    • Redness
    • Pain
    • Swelling

Risk Factors

Do you have a family history of arthritis?  Genes and having parents or siblings with certain types of arthritis will make you more susceptible to a form of arthritis that is triggered by environmental factors. Gout, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis are some of the many forms of arthritis that are more likely to show up as we age. Men and women are more likely to see different types of arthritis, for example, rheumatoid arthritis is more common in women and gout is more common in men. Previous joint injuries and the extra stress on the joints from carrying around extra weight will increase the chances of developing a form of arthritis.

Treatment

Do you prefer the alternative treatment for your health care needs?  A massage is an option that can help relieve the stiffness and pain related to osteoarthritis. Not only does it aid in being relaxed, but it’s also a drug-free alternative to medications and surgeries. Studies have also shown tai chi has been effective, this Chinese exercise has slow, rhythmic movements that can be a good aid to keeping the joints moving. Yoga and stretching is a good way to remain active and flexible allowing the joints to move more freely.
