Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica pain is often a reoccurring problem, and surprisingly many people do not know to attribute aches and pains in the lower back, legs or backend to sciatica until they learn more about it. That’s why we’ve gathered some basic information about what symptoms you should look for in regards to sciatica and what your best course of treatment may be.

Symptoms of Sciatica

If you’ve dealt with sciatica in the past, you know that it isn’t something that goes away when you take a couple of aspirin. So, how do you know if the pain you are dealing with is due to sciatica or something else? Consider the following:

•    There are exceptions, but sciatic nerve pain in the back or buttock is usually located on one side of the body. Leg pain may be in one leg or both.
•    There may be both lower back and leg pain. However, in most cases, the pain is more severe and pronounced in the legs.
•    Sciatic pain usually radiates. Radiation, in reference to pain, means that the core of the pain may be in your lower back, but it will spread down your legs.
•    The pain usually feels better when walking or laying down, but it may get worse when you are sitting, especially for extended periods of time.
•    There is often a numbness or pins and needles sensation as well as straight pain.

How Your Chiropractor Can Help Relieve Sciatica Symptoms

So, if you have decided that pain you’ve been feeling in your back or legs may be because of sciatica, it is time to work with a chiropractor to help you feel your very best. So, how can your chiropractor help?

•    Because sciatica is caused by nerve compression, a chiropractor may be able to manipulate the spine so that there is less pressure on this sensitive part of the body.
•    Your chiropractor will get to the cause of sciatica. Many things can cause sciatic nerve pain. Your chiropractor can help figure out what cause is affecting you most so you can get on the road to recovery.
•    Additional therapy may be in order – Since sciatica is a complicated matter, your chiropractor may have a few other ideas to help you push through the pain. Make sure you consider the benefits of physical therapy, cold therapy, massage and other possible solutions to find a treatment method that will work for you.
